With the 2022 FIFA World Cup still fresh in our memory, the evidence is fairly conclusive that World Cups don’t tend to be won by the most potent and prolific sides, but that clean sheets are the key to World Cup glory. Saving one’s side from a sure goal has just as much value as scoring one. In rugby, the Springboks have taken home many trophies through their valiant defensive efforts. It’s much the same in investing - it’s not only about what you make, but also about what you keep. Traditional long only equity funds are the star players while income funds make up a formidable back line. But investors should consider whether their defence may be missing an integral player such as hedge funds to mitigate risk.

VOLATILITY BRINGS RISK MANAGEMENT TO THE FORE

As volatility has become the new normal, risk management is as important as asset allocation and stock selection in the investment process, says Marthinus van der Nest, head of Amplify Investment Partners. As Amplify employs a range of independent managers with different investment processes and fund-specific mandates, there is no one size fits all approach when it comes to risk management.
Most of Amplify’s managers are focused on capturing as much upside as possible while protecting on the downside by managing risk. There is, among all of them, a significant emphasis on diversification and not positioning a portfolio for a single outcome. Equally important are position sizes, and its managers are avoiding taking large bets, given the heightened level of uncertainty.
