Technology is everywhere, yet it’s also strangely absent. We hold incredible computing power in our hands, yet we often find ourselves yearning for the crackle of an old vinyl record or the tangible imperfection of a handmade object.

This tension between technology and humanity is fascinating. While technology has become an essential part of our lives, it’s not without its drawbacks. The constant connectivity can be overwhelming, leading to a need for digital detoxes and a yearning for the imperfections of the analog world.

The power of forgetfulness

Technology provides a perpetual memory, but this can be a double-edged sword. While it allows us to access information instantly, it can also hinder our ability to forgive, progress, and adapt. Without forgetfulness, we cannot forgive, and without forgiveness, we cannot progress.

The illusion of intelligence

In an age of instant information, it’s easy to mistake access for intelligence. However, true intelligence lies in critical thinking and the ability to discern between information and knowledge. We must use technology as a tool for learning and growth, not as a crutch for avoiding intellectual effort.

The importance of human connection

Human connection is now more critical than ever. As leaders, we must champion genuine relationships within our organisations and with our clients. Technology should augment, not replace, human interaction.

Unimaginable services

Think about the inefficiencies in businesses. I believe leadership needs to be careful here, as this can lead to a dystopia. Doing more with fewer humans is possible today, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I think it is about doing more of what was previously thought impossible. That is the burden on the shoulders of leadership today.

It is not about imagining a world where there is hyperproductivity and the margin between productivity and human labour splits wide open. I think what needs to happen is that you, as the CEO or leader, are not incentivised in that way.

It is not about doing more with less; it’s about taking your human labour and augmenting it with these capabilities to do more of what was previously unimagined. I think that is what you’re going to see. You’re going to see competitive edges start emerging.

Embracing the unimaginable

We need to look beyond the immediate impact of technology and consider its long-term implications. There are parallels between the transformative power of fire and the potential of artificial intelligence to reshape society. With every technological advancement comes the responsibility to use it wisely and ethically.

The next frontier

Africa is the next frontier for technological innovation. The continent’s unique challenges and opportunities will give rise to solutions with global applicability. I envision a future where technology empowers Africa to leapfrog traditional development barriers and create a more equitable and sustainable world.
